Luke Austen

Tuesday, 05 September 2017 | 10AM- 2PM

LUKE AUSTEN is the consummate artist.

His skills as a musician are well recognised by his peers and his unique and soulful vocals are his trademark.

It’s these qualities, along with his ability as a songwriter, which helped him win the prestigious TOYOTA Star Maker competition in 2010 as well as 2 highly coveted Golden Guitar Awards in 2011.

The Luke Austen musical story began when at age 13 he joined his family band as a guitarist until he graduated from the national CMAA College of Country Music in 1999 when he was just 17.

To further hone his skills and broaden his horizon as a musician, Luke spent 4 very formative years from 2000 playing bass guitar and singing in the band of legendary bush balladeer, Brian Young.  Extensive touring by 4WD in outback Australia and performing to Indigenous communities in isolated locations gave Luke the musical and life skills he would later need to help him emerge as an artist in his own right.

Since completing his musical ‘apprenticeship’ with The Brian Young Show in 2003 and spending the next 8 years as Bass player and Backing Singer for Troy Cassar-Daley, Luke has gone on to take centre stage and make an indelible mark on the Australian country music landscape with the release of 2 albums – Light of Day in 2010 and Truth Is Simple in 2012.

Both albums featured songwriting partnerships with the likes of Shane Nicholson, Beccy Cole, Troy Cassar-Daley and legendary Nashville song-smith, Jerry Sally and garnered nominations in a number of categories in the Country Music Awards of Australia.

It was Luke’s 2014 nomination for Male Artist of the Year for Truth is Simple alongside heavyweights Keith Urban, Lee Kernaghan and Russell Morris that spoke volumes about his standing in the industry and the support he has from his fans and peers.

Although Luke has strong country roots, he has not allowed himself to be boxed into a narrow genre definition and apart from songs that clearly show a definite ‘blues’ bent, his songs and singing style demonstrate a rare ability to embrace the broader, sometimes ‘pop’ side of roots and country music.

With influences as diverse as George Jones, Neil Young, Randy Travis and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Luke was destined to evolve into the unique artist he is today.

Luke will spend the balance of 2014 songwriting in between a sprinkling of live shows in readiness for a release of new material in 2015.
